Are Hormones The Main Cause Of Acne?

Are hormones the main cause of acne? Probably – after all acne normally starts during puberty and it is thought that the male hormone testosterone plays a major part.
Testosterone works to increase the production of sebum oil. If the gland becomes too active the tiny hair follicles in the skin can become blocked and then infected. Females as well as males produce testosterone, although acne is more common for teenage boys.

What Causes Spots

Spots are not caused by dirt as many people think. Spots form when the pores of the skin become blocked by natural serbum oil and there are a number of reasons that may cause this to happen, for example:
Hormones
Diet
Skin irritation
Some medications
Stress
I plan to cover each of these in more detail over the next few posts.

Whatever the cause it is advisable to start treating acne as soon as it appears and before it spreads further. Most people think of acne as red spots on the face because these are the most visible, however it can appear on the arms, chest and back.
